Northlands Coliseum is serving up another sporting event this year.

Davis Cup tennis returns to Edmonton for the first time in 21 years Sept. 15-17,as Canada faces India in front of crowds of up to 6,800 spectators at the former home arena of the Edmonton Oilers.

Alberta last hosted a Davis Cup match nine years ago in Calgary.

The winner of the best-of-five Davis Cup by BNP Paribas World Group play-off will return to the elite World Group while the loser will be relegated to regional qualifying.

Canada will be the top-ranked team at No. 16. India is ranked 18th. The two sides have never met in international tennis competition.

A 3-2 first-round loss to Britain earlier this year relegated Canada to the playoff round.

The event at Northlands will be the highest-level Davis Cup tie Canada has ever hosted in Alberta, along with the nation’s 3-2 World Group play-off win against Brazil held in Calgary in 2003.
